Emma Hanover was not having a very good day. It wasn't even noon yet and already things were just going from bad to worse. As she drove down the road, her mind wandered back to what had happened to her only minutes before. Her boss had been PMSing and unfortunately, Emma had taken the brunt of her anger and had gotten fired. Although she suspected that she would be able to go back at a later time when her boss was in a better mood and get her job back, there was the possibility that she couldn't. What would she do then? All the possibilities were flooding her mind, either she would have to find some other job really quick, or go back to her parents and apologize, hoping they would forgive her and take care of her again. She couldn't do that. What would happen to her living situation? Her roommates weren't her biggest fans and she couldn't particularly blame them...but did they like her at least enough to understand her situation? Emma really wasn't sure. She tried to cheer herself up and put things into perspective, but that was when her car began to make a strange noise. As she began to pass the beach, the noise grew louder until she was about to pull into a parking spot when it stalled on it's own, right in the middle of the road. "Perfect," she said under her breath, happy that the day was quite dreary and that no one was down by the beach currently so she wasn't obstructing traffic. Emma took in a deep breath, trying once again to rationalize things. She gave the car a moment and then restarted it. It roared to life briefly, just long enough for her to pull into a space, before dying again. She knew nothing about cars and now she would need to have it fixed, and just how was she going to do that without a job?
She exited the car with a huff, planning on going to sit in the beach despite the rain for a bit, because it was a welcoming place to her. Emma enjoyed the beach very much when it was summer out, and although there were a few more months before she could go swimming properly, at least something familiar and calming could surround her on her bad day. Her heels clicked against the pavement as she neared the sand, when all of a sudden she tripped and wound up on the ground before she had even realized she was falling in the first place. Stunned, she sat there for a moment trying to get her bearings straight. She attempted to stand when she realized that the heel of her shoe had broken. Emma inspected it closer, and found that she had not only had she gotten a run in her nylons, but her new skirt was torn a little at the bottom as well. Still trying to keep her thoughts straight, she took off the shoes and continued down toward the water to ease her mind. When she got to a spot that seemed good enough, she plopped down on the sand. As she looked out toward the water that was crashing up against the shore, Emma attempted to think of a good plan of action. Although she was trying to hold off on it, a couple of tears began to brim at the edge of her eyes before spilling over. It would figure, she had run out of her waterproof eye make-up yesterday. She probably looked like a yeti. She tried to compose herself for another few moments, but then decided to hell with it, and the flood gates opened up. Emma was so frustrated at everything, she could just tear her hair out. Instead, she threw her designer heels out at the water.
It was a spur of the moment decision, when Emma stood up to her feet. She looked at the water as though it was one of the adversaries that she had to defeat, clearly not thinking properly. However, what else did she have to lose, her dignity? That was already gone for the day. She glanced behind her where she didn't spot anyone, as the skies began to grow darker, she pulled off her shirt and ruined skirt, down to only her undershirt and boy shorts. Emma decided to throw caution to the wind and jumped into the freezing cold water. Although it was getting warmer outside as it was springtime, it was no where near time to start swimming outdoors yet, something she quickly learned when she hit the water. It was freezing and the whole thing was stupid, but she didn't get out. She didn't think it was cold enough to really do damage to her and at least it was taking her mind off her day. As she came back up to the surface, she pushed her wet hair out of her face and let out a bit of a scream followed by a peal of laughter. The whole ordeal was freeing. For the first time in a long time, she wasn't worried about what anyone thought of her, not that anyone was around anyway, but if they were she didn't care. She was being silly and stupid and if she didn't look like a yeti or crazy person before, she was almost certain she did now, but she didn't care. Maybe a little good would come out of the day after all.
