"Go away, stupid sun." Amelia mumbled, attempting to shield her eyes from the ray of light that flooded into the bedroom. Groaning, she rolled over and buried her face into a pillow. It was way too early to get up. Especially after another failed attempt of trying to wait up all night for Paul to get home. Almost instinctively, she flung her arm to Paul's side of the bed. As usual, she had been worried about his safety all night. She hated not knowing he was okay. And, how she was constantly tossing and turning all night, paranoid that he would die because something went wrong with a fire. And, it definitely scared her when she didn’t feel his body lying next to hers in their bed.
Mia quickly sat up. Her eyes scanned the room, and, it was obvious that Paul hadn’t been in it since yesterday. His clothes weren’t scattered on the floor, as usual. And, he never made his bed in the morning. Thinking the worst, she shot out of bed. Where was he? She hurried over to the door that led to the bathroom and opened it. Not seeing him, she panicked. What if something had gone wrong last night? What if he was in the hospital? Or, even worse, what if he had died? She heard that there was a pretty bad fire last night, after watching the local news. But, if something had happened to Paul, the station would have called her right?
Somewhat frantic at this point, she quickly exited the couple’s bedroom, hurrying to check their answering machine. She would have heard if the phone rang. So, maybe nothing had happened. Maybe he had just decided to sleep at the station. Or, maybe something did happen, but they forgot to call her. Biting her lip, Mia walked into the living room and saw that they had a few messages waiting for them to be checked. Just as she was about to press play, she heard a familiar voice swearing in the kitchen. Again, she hurried out of the living room and toward the kitchen. Relief flooded her body when she saw her fiancé standing there.
Amelia had no idea what she would have done if something had happened to Paul. He was her world; the reason she kept putting up with her dull life. She wouldn’t imagine life without him. Even back when they were younger, Mia knew that he was the one that she could spend the rest of her life with. And, she hated always fearing that he wouldn’t be there one day. She attempted to fix her mess of blonde hair, not wanting him to be horrified by her fresh-out-of-bed appearance. Approaching him, she wrapped her arms around his waist and leaned her head against his back. “Good morning, Mister Masen. I was worried about you!”

Paul tensed momentarily as he felt two small arms wrap around his waist. The last thing he had expected was for Amelia to wake up, but he wasn't going to complain, not yet anyway. A soft sigh passed his lips and he relaxed slightly as she spoke. He knew she worried about him. She told him so often. Of course, being a firefighter he didn't have the safest job in the world, but he loved what he was doing. "I'm sorry, love." He whispered softly, covering her hands with his own. He closed his eyes and allowed his head to fall back on his shoulders, willing away the last thoughts of his horrid night and the lost child, for the moment at least. After all, it was over and there was nothing more that he could do. Slowly he dropped his hands to his side, uncovering Amelia's, and slowly turned to face her. A soft smile found his lips as he took in her disheveled appearance. It was quite obvious that she just crawled out of bed. Her beautiful blond hair was a mess, but knowing Mia she attempted to straighten it by running her fingers through it. It was something she did for as long as he could remember. Lifting his hands he cupped her face and leaned down, pressing his forehead to her own and stared into her eyes. Amelia had the most beautiful pair of blue eyes. Never in his life had he seen anyone else with eyes as bright as her's, and he loved that fact. His tongue lightly ran over his lower lip and he closed his eyes a moment, taking a deep breath. "Did I wake you?" He asked softly, opening his eyes again. His thumbs gently caressed her cheeks as he once again stared into her crystal like orbs. He hadn't been paying attention if he was being loud or not. He had been upset when he walked in and when he was upset he became careless. He came in knowing that she was asleep and in his brooding state he was probably slamming, pushing, and shoving everything in his way or grasp. "Sorry," He murmured softly, pressing his lips to her forehead with a soft sigh. Paul's fingers gently brushed against her cheeks, moving downward to lightly cup her neck. ooc: this post is an epic faiiiiil! remind me not to wake up again at four something in the morning and reply because nothing good comes from it. seriously. let me know if you can't work with this and i'll rewrite it after class.

TO DIE BY YOUR SIDE• the pleasure, the privilege is mine • IS SUCH A HEAVENLY WAY TO DIE"There's no need to apologize. It's not your fault I'm such a worrywart." Amelia replied, smiling a bit. She really did worry a lot. It even annoyed her at times, so she wondered how Paul managed to put up with it. She rested her head on his back again, happy that he was back home and safe. If something had happened to him, she probably would of gone crazy, knowing that she should of made him quit his job. But, she couldn't do that. He liked it too much. Plus, it was pretty cool to say her fiance was a firefighter; which was tens times better then her job.
When Paul turned around, Amelia looked up at him, slightly embarrassed. She knew she looked pretty bad right now. Which, was one of things she didn't like about them living together; he always got to see the unpleasant side of her. She grinned up at him when he pressed his forehead to hers. She was almost upset when she saw he didn't share the same expression. He was acting a little weird. Like he didn't want to be with her at the moment. "You don't seem to happy to see me." Mia teased, even though she had a feeling he wasn't. "And, no, you didn't wake me. I just decided to wake up early."
That wasn't completely a lie. He had been part of the reason she got up, but, it mainly was because of the sun. She watched him lick his lips and take a deep breath; it was like it was difficult for him to talk to her. But, she ignored it. "You know, if you want, we could go back to the bedroom and make up for you not being home last night." The blonde offered, continuing to smile up at Paul. He didn't really look like he wanted to take her up on her offer; causing her to frown a little bit. "Sorry? You don't need to be sorry. You really didn't do anything. I was just worried about you, that's all." By now, she was frowning completely. "Paul, baby, are you okay? Are you mad at me or something?"

YOU CAN FEEL THE POUNDING WRAPPED AROUND YOUR CHESTPAULMASEN NOTHING'S TOO EXCESSIVE WHEN YOU'VE GOT NOTHING LEFT He couldn't stop the small smile that found his lips as she told him not to apologize because she was a worrywart. And that she was. A lot of times he found that adorable, but other times it was a bit excessive. She could find little things in life and let them bother her, but when it came to his job she had every right to worry. There was never a guarantee that he would come home. He could go on to a job tomorrow and never walk out. And of course that scared him. Worried him. But he loved his job, loved helping people, and he wasn't willing to give that up.
Paul watched the grin form on Amelia's lips as he pressed his forehead to her's. She was breathtaking in her just woken state. He knew Amelia would be first to disagree with his thoughts on that, but he loved the way she looked in her natural state with no make-up or fancy clothes. Not that she didn't look just as breathtaking in those as well, she was always beautiful. Her simply looking his way and smiling sent his heart in a frenzy. His small smile quickly faded as she once again spoke, stating that he hadn't waken her, but he also didn't seem too happy to see her. That wasn't the case. Ever. The day she had agreed to move into his apartment made him the happiest man alive for the face alone that he'd get to see her every day. "No baby," He said softly, brushing her cheek lightly with his thumbs."Of course I'm happy to see you."
He lifted his hands to her hair, running his fingers through her long blond locks as she suggested that they go back to their room and make-up from what the missed out on last night. It sounded lovely, but he wasn't sure he could take his mind off the nights events long enough to give her the attention she needed. He watched her lips curl downward at his lack of instant reply. Amelia was speaking again before he could open his mouth and assure her. It appeared he was really messing up today. His frown soon matched her's and he dropped his hands from her face, pulling her flush against him. No," He repeated, placing soft kisses to the top of her head. "I'm not mad at you. I'm upset with myself. With the world even, but never you."
He sighed and rested his chin on the top of her head, inhaling deeply. The scent of her shampoo met his nose, teasing him and relaxing him. "I lost a little boy tonight. He heard himself mutter softly. His family didn't even think to grab them when they were exiting the house. I couldn't find him. His eyes closed and he tightened his hold on her. He didn't want to dwell on it anymore, he couldn't. He shouldn't have let it bother him as much as he has already. It jeopardized his job. He stood up straight and released his hold on her, taking a step back and leaning against the counter."I'm going to take a shower. Care to join me?

TO DIE BY YOUR SIDE• the pleasure, the privilege is mine • IS SUCH A HEAVENLY WAY TO DIE Amelia starred at Paul for a moment, unsure what to say. She couldn’t imagine how anybody would even think about leaving behind their own child. Their own flesh and blood. Especially in such a horrible situation. When it was pretty obvious that a kid, especially one that was probably very young, couldn’t get out of a burning house by himself. The parents of the boy obviously weren’t fit to be parents. And it angered her that nobody noticed it before. And, now, it had ended in the loss of the boy’s life. Biting her lip, she thought of something to say. But she could only picture the small child trying to find away out of the burning building. If only Paul had gotten him. Or his parents actually cared. As horrible as it was, it didn’t surprise her that somebody was that cold hearted. If she had been stuck in a burning building, her father wouldn’t have come to her rescue, even back we she was small. He would have just gone to the nearest liquor store to forget that he had even had a kid. But, Amelia, on the other hand would have done anything to save her own child. Or even the kids at the preschool. Heck, she would put any kid’s life before her own.
She rested her forehead against Paul’s chest. She could tell how much the loss had upset him by the way he held her. As he let go, she looked up at him, trying to read his expression. After all of the years they had been together, you think she would be an expert at reading what was on his mind. But her finace was pretty good at hiding it. And that often bothered her. Slowly, she walked up to him, and wrapped her arms around his waist and starred up at him. Getting up on her tippy toes, she managed to kiss him softly on the cheek. She wanted to tell him that it was fine. And that it wasn’t that big of a deal. But, it was. A little kid had died. And, yeah, it wasn’t Paul’s fault. But she knew that he probably could have found him if he had kept looking. But, in the end, Paul probably would have ended up dying in the process too. Part of her was relieved that he hadn’t looked longer. She knew how horrible that was, but she couldn’t bear to lose him. He was everything to her. And, with her luck, he wouldn’t have made it out of the building.
“I would love to join you.” Amelia finally managed to say, as she continued to gaze up at Paul. “But, I think you should know that it wasn’t your fault at all. His parents were obviously idiots and I know that you did everything you could. And that makes me extremely proud that you did try to save him.” She unwrapped one of her arms and reached it up to his face, cupping his cheek. “You really are an amazing person, Paul Masen. And I’m an extremely lucky that I know you. I still can’t believe how you ended up with somebody as awful as me.” She got up onto her toes again, his time pressing her lips to his. As usual, she completely melted from the sensation of the kiss. To this day, she still got weak-kneed and had a case of the butterflies every time they kissed, just like she did back when they first got together. And she loved it.

YOU CAN FEEL THE POUNDING WRAPPED AROUND YOUR CHESTPAULMASEN NOTHING'S TOO EXCESSIVE WHEN YOU'VE GOT NOTHING LEFT Paul stared down into Amelia’s eyes, meeting her gaze. By the way she was looking up at him, he knew she was thinking; thinking about what he had told her, what she could tell him to make him feel better, but in the end he figured she couldn’t think of anything to say. Because after all nothing said could bring this little boy back. He also knew that what he had told her had affected her. She, too, loved children as much as he did. She made a career of it, and he knew she wouldn’t want to do anything else with her life. He also knew that she would do everything in her power to keep her students, and when the time came her own children, safe. Her big heart and loving nature was what had first attracted him to her and he couldn’t imagine himself being with anyone else.
He wrapped his arms tighter around her waist as she rested her forehead against his chest, needing to feel her closer to him; to hold her tight and never let go. His loss today was bothering her as much as it was bothering him and he was beginning to wonder if he shouldn’t have said anything at all. He hated seeing her upset, especially when he knew her parents weren’t exactly up for the parents of the year award. They, especially her father, were a real piece of work. They were , perhaps, even worse than the one’s from his earlier fire. Most of the time he was surprised how well rounded, how loving Amelia had grown up to be. Most children growing up in the situation she had would had turned to drugs and alcohol, but she didn’t. She overcame the odds and became an amazing woman and he was thankful he was blessed enough to have her in his life.
Paul felt her arms around his wait before he had realized she had lifted her head from his chest, and was looking up at him. He forced a small smile upon his lips as she stood on her tippy toes to press a gentle kiss on his cheek. For a moment he has wished she had kissed him properly on the lips; that perhaps that would have distracted him from his grief; from the hurt he felt from losing a child. A child that wasn’t even his own. Anger momentarily engulfed him. How could his parents have been so irresponsible, so thoughtless? Did they actually believe that their son could have found his own way out of the burning house? Amelia’s voice dragged him from his thoughts and he looked down at her in momentary confusion. He had forgotten that he had extended her an offer to join him in the shower-something he desperately needed; the smell of smoke lingered on his skin and in his hair. He stared down into her eyes as she continued to speak, telling him that what had happened tonight wasn’t his fault. The sensible part of him she was right, but the insensible part was telling him that that little boy would still be alive if he had only gotten their sooner. He shook the thought from his mind and continued to listen to her as she spoke. He took a deep breath as she unwrapped her arms from around his waist and replaced her hands on his face; cupping his cheeks. His lips curled into a frown as she told him she couldn’t understand how he ended up with someone as awful as her. The frown stuck even as she pressed her lips to his.
“Baby,” He muttered softly, moving a step away from her. “There is nothing awful about you. I don’t understand why you would think something like that. It’s absolutely ridiculous. You are the most amazing woman I have ever met.” His arms pulled her close to him as he spoke and he stared down into her eyes, compassion and love shining in his own. “You aren’t only strong willed, you are passionate about everything you do. You have the biggest heart of anyone I know, so I can honestly say I’m lucky to have you in my life.” Paul moved his hands to cup her face, his thumb lightly caressing her cheeks. “I love you.” He said softly, slowly leaning down to press a gently kiss to her soft lips. He couldn’t believe that each kiss the shared still felt like the first; warmth engulfed his heart and butterflies filled his stomach. Pulling away slowly he looked into her eyes, smiling, his thumbs still moving slowly over the smooth silky skin of her face.”I don’t ever want to hear something like that come from your mouth again, alright?”

TO DIE BY YOUR SIDE• the pleasure, the privilege is mine • IS SUCH A HEAVENLY WAY TO DIE Amelia looked up at Paul as he spoke. He was obviously delusional if he thought she was the most amazing women he had ever met. But, she couldn’t bring herself to argue with him. Especially with him looking at her the way he was. God, she loved him. She loved how caring he was. How he always knew what to say. And, no matter what, he always made her feel better about herself; even if he exaggerated about how great she was. “I love you, too.” She whispered, eagerly kissing him back. Grinning, she looked up at him for a moment, taking it all in. She wished that they could always be like this. That they could just be together all the time, and just kiss and talk.
To be honest, it shocked her that she was here with him. If her grandma hadn’t taken her in and forced her to move to Elizabeth’s Hollow, she’d be back in Chicago. With her parents. Her horrible, self-centered parents. If they had raised Amelia, she would have been pretty messed up. She probably would have become addicted to meth, like her mother, or a ragging alcoholic, like her father. Heck, there was a chance she could have been dead. Her dad had been pretty violent. And, she could vividly remember the nights when he would beat her mother senseless. And how she’d go back into her room and call her grandma; crying to her about how daddy was beating mommy again. It wasn’t until she was seven that her grandmother decided to put an end to it. She showed up at their dingy apartment, demanding that Mia go back home with her. Her parents didn’t even put up a fight to keep her. They were just happy they didn’t have another mouth to feed.
She remembered how different Georgia was when she first moved there. Everyone was really nice to her, especially her grandma’s friends in the neighborhood gardening club. She remembered how much happier she was; how she actually fit in for once her in life. And, she remembered when she first met Paul. They had been neighbors and she actually hadn’t talked to him until about a year after moving to the Hollow. She had been playing in her grandma’s garden when he accidently threw his ball into their backyard. After returning it to him, she had a feeling that they would be friends. And she made sure of it. From that moment on, they were always together. They grew to be the best of friends and she was pretty sure that she was going to marry him by the age of eleven. They were fourteen when they shared their first kiss. It was a hot summer day and the pair decided to go down to the beach to cool off. She remembered how happy she felt. How her knees felt like jello and her stomach almost ached from the overwhelming fluttering sensation she had.
They didn’t become an “actual couple” until their freshmen year of high school. By the time they were sixteen, they had already professed their love for each other. And, by seventeen, they had already started planning their future together. How many kids they were going to have, what they were going to name them, where they were going to live, where they would go for their honeymoon, etc. Amelia had never been happier. And, she was positive that they would always be together after Paul stuck by her side during a scare in junior year. A few months after going all the way, which Amelia had been against for a while, she thought she was pregnant. She was terrified and way too scared to tell Paul. She thought that he would ditch her as soon as she confided in him. But, much to her relief, he stayed with her and even comforted her when she started sobbing as soon as the words, “I think I’m pregnant”, escaped her lips. And, much to their relief, it turned out that they wouldn’t be parents anytime soon.
Although, every now and then, Amelia thought about what would have happened if they had had a baby. Would they of been has happy as they were now? Or would they of grown tired of each other and split up? She knew it didn’t matter, but, she still wanted to know. She was pretty sure that they probably wouldn’t have kept it. Her grandma would have been horrified if she knew her granddaughter hadn’t waited until her wedding night to have sex; being the good Christian woman she was. But, all that didn’t matter now. What mattered now was that she was with Paul and they were as happy was could be. She continued to stare up at him, still lost in her thoughts. For some twisted reason, she had a thought that maybe that child had died today as a way to say it was time for them to have one of their own. After all, death leads to life, in some cycle. And, she knew that she really wanted to a baby. It took her a moment to even realize he had said something else. “I can’t make any promises.” She replied, smiling a bit. Biting her lip, she wanted to tell him how she felt about the child and baby thing. But, she decided it probably wasn’t a good time to talk about it. “So, um…” , Amelia started, trying to take her mind off the subject, “Do you still want to take that shower?”

YOU CAN FEEL THE POUNDING WRAPPED AROUND YOUR CHESTPAULMASEN NOTHING'S TOO EXCESSIVE WHEN YOU'VE GOT NOTHING LEFT Paul’s lips curled upward as Amelia kissed him eagerly, telling him that she loved him too. He couldn’t believe how he had ended up with such an amazing woman, or the fact that she didn’t see herself as such. That he could blame completely on her parents, but he was working hard to erase those thoughts from her pretty little head; she would see her worth once he was finished. He stared down into Amelia’s eyes, remembering the first time he saw her. He was about eight years old at the time and the current rumor of Elizabeth’s Hollow was that his neighbor had left for Chicago to pull her granddaughter from an abusive situation with her parents. He was sitting on his front porch, toy car in his lap, when his neighbor pulled up into her driveway. He hadn’t been sure what abusive parents were at the time and his parents didn’t care to explain saying it was rude to stick your nose in someone else’s business, especially when it is only a mere rumor to which no one knew if it was true or not. Paul merely nodded and apologized, but then the car door opened and a young girl stepped out and he couldn’t help but smile. He had never had a neighbor his age. He had been ready to run over and introduce himself when his mother called him in, scolding him for leaving his toys scattered across the floor.
He had seen her often after that, but she always seemed to shy away, or perhaps that was him. That didn’t matter at all now. It wasn’t until a year later that they had actually truly met, sure, he knew her name by then, everyone had, but he had never had an opportunity to actually talk to her until one day he got fed up with seeing her alone all the time. He had stepped out into his backyard one day with his soccer ball in tote, it was his current faze and he was pretty good at it, and he had noticed Amelia, once again alone, playing in her grandmother’s garden. To this day Amelia had believed that ball had flew over that fence by accident, but in reality he had kicked over with the intentions of finally getting to know her. And it had worked. They had become best friends after that and it was almost impossible to separate them; it was as if they were truly joined at the hip.
He also remembered when his feelings for Amelia had first changed from friendship to something deeper. He was twelve and he was waiting outside Amelia’s front door so that they could head to the park and ride on the bike path before he had to go in to do his homework and eat dinner, but when she came out she seemed different. It was like he noticed for the first time his best friend was a girl. His breath caught in his throat and butterflies erupted in his stomach. He remembered thinking something along the lines of how come she didn’t look this pretty yesterday. Of course, he hadn’t said anything about his recent thoughts and they had headed off toward the park as planned.
Amelia had been his first everything and he wouldn’t change that for the world. He couldn’t imagine loving anyone the way he loved her. She was his reason for living and despite the horrible circumstances for coming to Elizabeth’s Hollow he was glad. He didn’t know what he’d do without her, who he’d be without her. He thought back to when they had first become a couple, it was their freshmen year in high school and he had been so nervous about asking her to be his girlfriend. He remembered talking to his dad about how to do it when all of a sudden his mother squealed saying she knew it; Paul had merely blushed and muttered something about how she used to tell him that being nosy wasn’t only rude but unacceptable in this family. In the end Paul had nervously pulled Amelia aside when they were on the way to their lockers. He knew he had probably muttered half of it but in the end he got the important question out and to his surprise she had said yes. By sixteen he knew he was in love with her, knew that he didn’t want to be with anyone else for the rest of his life and was determined that he would one day marry her. He remembered first confessing his words of love to her and how amazing it felt to hear them back. He also remembered how amazing it was to sit with Amelia in his arms and plan out the perfect life together- the perfect life that almost came too soon.
He remembered the fear he felt when Amelia had told him she had thought she was pregnant. So many thoughts had gone through his mind at that moment. I have to get a job. How am I going to tell my parents? I’ve got to take care of her. I’m not ready for a child yet. Never once did he think of leaving. So, they were still in high school, but that didn’t mean they couldn’t handle starting their family a tad earlier than planned. He had soothed Amelia the best he could, hating having to see her in tears. In the end their fears where just that, fears. They weren’t going to end up parents at the tender age of seventeen.
And now he was engaged to his childhood sweetheart and they were actually planning to have a child of their own, something he wanted just as much as she did. He wanted to be a father, to teach his children about the wonders of life, and he was ready. They both were. “You can so promise.” He said softly, taking in her smiling face; his earlier heartbreak forgotten at the nearness of his soon to be wife, the keeper of his heart. Paul’s lips curled into a slight smirk as she spoke, sounding suddenly unsure of herself. He took a step forward and reached out to her, lifting her up and throwing her over his shoulders. “Yeah, something like that.” He muttered in reply, heading towards their bedroom.
